The City:

Winnipeg, located in the heart of North America, has deep Scottish roots, dating back to its earliest permanent European settlers, who were sponsored in their journey by Thomas Douglas 5th Earl of Selkirk - the younger brother of the Lord Daer whom Burns met.

These "Selkirk Settlers" were joined in the years and decades to come by peoples of all lands and continents.

Winnipeg today is a vibrant, multicultural city.

The Host Club:

The Winnipeg Robert Burns Club, your hosts for Conference 2007, traces its beginnings back to the railway that helped to open Canada.

It was a group of railway workers, good Scotsmen all, who got together in January 1907 to celebrate the birthday of Scotland's bard.  It was this same group of railway men who, the following autumn, comprised the core group that founded the Winnipeg Burns Club.

As the club celebrates our Centennial Year, we are an active and open club, welcoming all admirers of the bard.
