Getting to Winnipeg

By Road.

Winnipeg is virtually in the centre of North America and is easily accessible whether coming from the East, the West, or the South.

From the West:

Winnipeg is just over 800 miles (14 hours) east of Calgary straight down Highway #1 - The Trans Canada.

If arriving from the West, continue into Winnipeg, crossing under Highway #100 "The Perimeter Highway" a total of 8 miles on Portage Avenue (which is Number #1 highway inside the city) to Main Street. The Fairmont is on your right just beyond the corner of Portage and Main.

From the East:

Winnipeg is just over 1300 miles (27 hours) west of Toronto, via the Trans-Canada Highway (Highways 400, 69 and 17 in Ontario and #1 in Manitoba).

If arriving from the East continue into the city crossing under Highway #100 "The Perimeter Highway" a total of 8 miles on Fermor Avenue - (Highway # 1 East inside the city), turning right (North) at St Anne’s Road, continuing up St Mary’s Road, crossing the Main Street bridges and four blocks to Portage Avenue. The Fairmont is to your right on Portage Avenue East.

From the South:

If you are driving up from the United States, we recommend taking Interstate 29 through the Dakotas, to Pembina (ND) & Emerson (MB), where you will meet the friendly and professional staff of Canadian Border Services. Crossing the frontier, continue up Highway #75 for 60 miles into Winnipeg. Continue into the city crossing under Highway #100 "The Perimeter Highway" for seven miles to the intersection of Pembina Hwy, and Osborne Street. Keeping to the right, continue through the intersection and cross the bridge into downtown Winnipeg. Turn right on Portage Avenue for 3 blocks to Main Street. The Fairmont is on your right just beyond the corner of Portage and Main.

Things you should know if you are driving

If you are coming from overseas and renting a car please note:

We drive on the right side of the road but from the left side of the vehicle.

Posted speed limits are in kilometers per hour and are generally 100 km/h on the highways.  Inside the city most of our major roads are 60 km/h.  If there are no posted signs the speed limit is 50 km/h.

All visitors should please note that any lane designated with a diamond symbol is reserved for transit buses and bicycles.  Cars may only enter a diamond lane to turn.

Unless posted otherwise, it is legal to turn right on a red light, as long as it is safe to do so.  Left turns on red are also permitted if turning from one one-way street into another.

Bus/Coach

For those who prefer to travel by bus (coach) Greyhound offers four scheduled trips per day in Canada, and one a day to and from several points in the US. Winnipeg’s Bus Terminal is located on Portage Avenue, just 11 blocks from the hotel.
